Recipe: Slow Cooked Turkey Chili

This is the perfect time of year to pull out the ol’ slow cooker and make some delicious comfort food. On Sunday night after tweeting about the turkey chili I’d made for dinner, I was asked by a few for the recipe. I’ve fine tuned this one to suit our taste buds over the last couple years, so I’m happy to share it with you. Note: this is a perfect recipe to prepare in the morning and leave bubbling away in your kitchen until dinner time.

Jen’s Slow Cooked Turkey Chili

Recipe yields 8 servings.


1 tablespoon coconut oil

1 pound lean ground turkey

2 cans low sodium tomato soup

2 cans organic kidney beans, drained

1 can organic black beans, drained

½  medium onion, chopped

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 tablespoon red pepper flakes

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon ground cumin

1 pinch ground black pepper

Salt to taste


  1. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Place turkey in the pan and cook until evenly brown; drain.
  2. Coat the inside of a slow cooker with coconut oil. Mix in turkey, tomato soup, kidney beans, black beans and onion. Season with chili powder, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, cumin, black pepper and salt.
  3. Cover and cook 8 hours on Low or 4 hours on High.

I serve this with a dollop of sour cream and a little shredded cheddar cheese on top. Toasted garlic bread goes very nicely as a side (read: awesome for dipping!)  We’ve also discovered that this chili is quite perfectly paired with ice old Lions Winter Ale by Granville Island Brewing.

Burn Baby Burn

In search of this dancer’s shape, many of us are becoming regulars at the barre…the ballet barre, that is. Over the last few months, I’ve become obsessed with Barre Fitness! Barre classes are a breath of fresh air for fitness fanatics who are sick of traditional workouts, exercise newbies who prefer low-impact activity, yoga- or Pilates-lovers looking to mix it up, or ex-dancers who’d rather die than go for a run.

These classes take you through a series of exercise moves designed to target certain muscle groups with laser-like precision. Arms, abs, glutes and thighs all get special attention. Rather than big, sweeping movements, you’ll do tiny maneuvers that you’ll repeat so many times your muscles will shake and burn. (Nobody’s kidding when they use the term barre burn!) Simple, but deadly. The repetitive movements fatigue the muscles, which forces them to adapt -building new muscle fibers and getting stronger. Depending on the day, you can step it up and really sweat it out with Cardio or Power Barre, sneak in a quickie with an Xpress Barre class, or take the more traditional Classic or Barre Fitness classes.

On first impression upon arriving at the North Shore Barre Fitness studio,  I was stunned by the beautiful space- bamboo floors; big, bright windows; and floor-to-ceiling mirrors; a gorgeous locker room with showers and towel service; everything about it feels airy and relaxing. And what I’ve come to love about the studio over the months I’ve been attending classes is that it gives me an outlet for stress and bad days. It’s a place to feel comfortable, in my element, at home. Not only is the owner, Norrie  Zaplatynsky friendly and fabulous, her entire staff is absolutely wonderful too. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a phenomenal group of ladies who attend class there, making the environment a truly welcoming one.

Colour Us Creative

On Saturday night, Shannon rounded up a group of her favourite ladies and hosted a Painting Party to celebrate her birthday. We all brought different colours and types of paint plus a few brushes and supplies to share and the hostess provided us each with our own blank canvas to work with.

We spent the evening eating, drinking, socializing and creating art. Despite coming in with what I deemed a pretty serious case of “painter’s block,” it didn’t take long for me to put some paint on my brush and go for it…and I couldn’t believe how much fun it was!

Once done, we were so proud! We all had little artists inside that we didn’t know existed. It was cool to look around at everybody’s work afterwards too- we had all come up with such different ideas. I can’t wait to get out the brushes and paint something again soon! Thanks for the inspiration, ladies!


Happy Autumn! Cheers to my favourite season! New notebooks empty with promise, new pencils waiting to rush words over the page, and oh, all the amazing Fall fashion. This time of year, more than any other, represents a fresh start to me.

In this spirit, I have decided to get my blogging booty back into gear. I have really missed maintaining a personal blog, so I’ve decided to reclaim my little corner of the world wide web. I’m so looking forward to getting back to it. I only hope that I still have a reader or two.
